Downtown Matthews' Fall Saturdays Start at the Farmers' Market and End at Stumptown Park

The busiest stretch of the year in downtown Matthews runs from Oct. 10 through Nov. 21, 2026. Most of it happens on Saturday mornings. Through that window the Matthews Community Farmers' Market at 188 N. Trade St. is open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. Every big dated downtown event this fall either overlaps those hours or picks up later in the day. The market's last main-season Saturday is Nov. 21. After that it drops to a 9-to-11 winter schedule, and downtown gets quieter heading into December.

That makes the market the easiest place to plan a fall Saturday from. Below are the weekends in order, with what's happening at each end of Trade Street.

The Fixed Point at 188 N. Trade

The market's main 2026 season started April 11 and ends Nov. 21, Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. Its winter season runs December 2026 through March 2027 on Saturdays from 9 to 11 a.m. It sits next to Renfrows. Free parking is on Trade Street, on Charles Street, and in the grassy lot behind the market off Cotton Gin Alley.

Those three parking spots are worth remembering, because the weekends below fill them up. When a festival is running at Stumptown Park, 120 S. Trade St., the market crowd and the festival crowd are going after the same curb space at the same hour. On those mornings the Cotton Gin Alley lot is the one to know about.

Oct. 10: The First Overlap

Fall for Matthews is the Matthews Chamber's free downtown festival, held Saturday, Oct. 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Stumptown Park. The lineup includes arts and crafts vendors, business vendors, a children's area, live music, food vendors and a NextGen Village.

The festival opens two hours after the market does, and the two run side by side until noon. If you go to the market at 8, the Stumptown vendors will just be getting set up when you finish. If you start at Stumptown at 10, you still have two hours to walk up North Trade before the market stalls pack up. The Chamber posts updates on its Facebook event page, which is the place to check on the morning of.

Oct. 17: The Evening Exception

The following Saturday is the one fall weekend this season where the main downtown event is after dark. The Matthews Heritage Museum at 232 N. Trade St. is holding Museum After Dark on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. The museum lists it as a fall after-hours program on its events page, which is the best place to confirm details before you go.

The museum is on the same stretch of North Trade as the market. That gives you a two-part Saturday on one block: produce in the morning, the museum in the evening, and a quiet afternoon in between.

Oct. 24: Four Events, One Saturday

Oct. 24 is the busiest day on the fall calendar. Four separate organizations have something going on, and their hours overlap almost all day.

  1. 9 a.m. to noon. The Matthews Heritage Museum is organizing a headstone cleaning at Historic Matthews Cemetery, 291 Pleasant Hill Dr.
  2. 8 a.m. to noon. The farmers' market runs its regular hours at 188 N. Trade St.
  3. 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The second Romanian-American Festival fills Stumptown Park, free, with food, music, vendors and children's activities.
  4. 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. The Matthews Playhouse Halloween Haunted Trail runs its second night on the Four Mile Creek Trail behind the Matthews Community Center, 100 McDowell St.

A volunteer who helps clean headstones until noon can get to the Romanian-American Festival when it's an hour old, stay until it ends at 4, and still have 90 minutes before the trail opens. Few Saturdays in Matthews pack in that much within a short drive.

The cemetery is the only stop on that list that isn't on Trade Street or McDowell Street. Plan the morning around Pleasant Hill Drive and the afternoon around downtown.

The Haunted Trail Runs Three Nights, in Two Versions

The Haunted Trail runs Friday, Oct. 23, through Sunday, Oct. 25, 2026. The Playhouse splits each night into two experiences, and the schedule is set by the sunset.

  • Not So Spooky, 5:30 to 7 p.m., is a lighthearted walk through the woods before the sun goes down. It's designed for children ages 6 and up, and costumes and interacting with the characters are encouraged.
  • The Halloween Fun Zone, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., has trunk-or-treat, face painting, a DJ and games. It's free with a Not So Spooky ticket and recommended for kids ages 2 to 12.
  • Full Fright, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., takes groups through the dark woods with a tour guide. It's recommended for ages 10 and up.

The trail is a fundraiser for the Playhouse's Sponsor-A-Student and Scholarship Funds, which help make the performing arts more accessible to people in the community. It's also an outdoor event on a creekside trail, so check the forecast before you dress the kids.

For families with a mix of ages, the Fun Zone running half an hour past the end of Not So Spooky helps. The younger kids can stay busy with face painting while older siblings or parents get ready for the 7:30 Full Fright start.

Nov. 7: The Last Big Stumptown Saturday

Pawsitively Matthews takes over Stumptown Park on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It's free and includes pet vendors, food trucks, demonstrations and adoptable dogs.

This is the last dated Stumptown Park festival on the fall calendar, and it follows the same pattern as Oct. 10. The festival opens two hours after the market, and both are running between 10 a.m. and noon. A dog walk that starts at the market and ends at Stumptown is a natural Saturday morning for anyone with a leash in hand.

Nov. 21: Where the Season Changes

Nov. 21 is the market's last 8-to-noon Saturday of 2026. When the market comes back in December, it runs from 9 to 11 a.m. Those two hours last through March 2027.

That's a four-hour Saturday window cut in half, and it's the clearest marker that downtown Matthews has moved from its fall schedule to its winter one. Anyone who's gotten used to an 11:30 market run through the fall will find the stalls closed by then once December starts.

December Moves Indoors, to McDowell Street

Downtown's December calendar moves from Trade Street to the Matthews Community Center theatre on McDowell Street. Matthews Playhouse is staging The Best Christmas Pageant Ever as part of its 2026–2027 mainstage season.

  • Thursday, Dec. 10, 7:30 p.m. A pay-what-you-can performance.
  • Dec. 11 through Dec. 20. The public run, with evening shows at 7:30 p.m.
  • Weekend matinees at 2 p.m. On Dec. 12, 13, 19 and 20. Dec. 12 and Dec. 19 each have a 7:30 evening show too.

The Dec. 12 and Dec. 19 double-show Saturdays line up with the market's winter hours. You could pick up winter produce on North Trade from 9 to 11 and still make the 2 p.m. matinee. Arrival, parking and seating details are on the Playhouse's Know Before You Go page.

What Hasn't Been Announced Yet

The town's 2026 tree lighting at Stumptown Park doesn't have a published date yet. Last year's event was called Winter Wonderlights and was held Saturday, Dec. 6, 2025, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Stumptown Park. That date tells you roughly where last year's event fell. It doesn't confirm this year's. We'll know the 2026 date when the town or its event partners post it, and until then the only dated December events downtown are the market's winter Saturdays and the Playhouse run.

For a quick reference, here are the dated downtown-area Saturdays from Oct. 10 to Dec. 20, 2026:

  • Oct. 10. Market, 8 a.m. to noon, plus Fall for Matthews, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Oct. 17. Market in the morning, plus Museum After Dark, 6 to 8 p.m.
  • Oct. 24. Cemetery headstone cleaning, market, Romanian-American Festival and Haunted Trail.
  • Nov. 7. Market, plus Pawsitively Matthews, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Nov. 21. Last main-season market Saturday.
  • Dec. 12 and Dec. 19. Winter market, 9 to 11 a.m., plus The Best Christmas Pageant Ever matinee and evening shows.
